Astria Health is excited to announce the expansion of its robotics program with the addition of Mako SmartRobotics™ for orthopedic surgery. Surgeons employing Mako SmartRobotics™ make use of CT images as the base of their surgical plan to capture each patient’s unique anatomy, combined with Mako’s AccuStop™ haptic technology which ensures that the surgeon is able to cut precisely and accurately. AccuStop™ haptics constrain the cutting tool within a boundary established by the surgeon’s patient-specific plan. The Mako system is used in partial knee, total knee, and hip replacement procedures.
In December, Astria Health received the Mako SmartRobotics™ system for the surgical suite at Astria Sunnyside Hospital. Dr. Zachary Tan and Dr. Adrian Obuch are board-certified Orthopedic Surgeons, now using Mako SmartRobotics™ to perform knee and hip replacement surgical procedures.
Data shows that robotic surgery is generally less invasive than traditional open or laparoscopic procedures. Through the use of the Mako, more of the patient’s bone is preserved than during manual surgery. In robot-assisted surgeries overall, less blood is lost, there is less tissue damage, and patients may be under anesthesia for a shorter time. Recovery from robot-assisted surgery is typically faster for patients, restoring them to full function, faster.
“Mako SmartRobotics™ is a game changer,” said Brian Gibbons, President and CEO of Astria Health. “It allows us to further personalize each surgery, aligning the patient’s needs with their unique anatomy and their surgeon’s skill. The addition of the Mako builds on the success of Astria Health’s robotics program, launched in 2022 with the da Vinci Xi surgical system, which is used for general and gynecological surgeries.”
Gibbons continued, “With a second robotic system, we are confident that Astria Health has done much more than simply double its robotics capabilities by bringing more medical advancement to the Yakima Valley. Patients now have more choices and better access to cutting-edge, high-tech options that are more convenient. Astria Sunnyside Hospital is the only hospital in the region to offer both systems. By combining this technology with our experienced surgeons, we can continue to provide exceptional care and help patients get back to their lives sooner.”
Astria Health remains committed to offering innovative, patient-focused care, close to home. General surgeons Dr. Ernesto Dizon, Dr. Manuel Ybanez, Dr. Cris Malino offer surgical options using the Da Vinci Xi system for procedures such as hernia repair, colon resection, appendix removal, and lung resection. Dr. Rachelle Sanjuan Chavez, OB/Gyn, offers procedures including tubal ligation, and hysterectomy (partial or complete).
