Astria Health is proud to announce the ground breaking event for the Behavioral Health Unit expansion at Astria Toppenish Hospital (ATH). This expansion is a significant milestone in our commitment to mental health needs in the State of Washington. With strong support from legislators, community partners, local government and businesses, 100% of the required $13.1 million has been secured to complete the new unit. Since 2017, the Washington State Health Care Authority has been addressing the ongoing shortage of civil commitment beds. Their focus has been to increase community-based capacity to provide these much-needed services.
The Behavioral Health expansion project will add 14 new beds to ATH’s existing capacity, bringing the total number of available beds to 29. With the additional capacity, the team will be able to serve an estimated additional 157 psychiatric patients annually. The civil commitment program serves patients from all over Washington State, providing long-term, intensive inpatient psychiatric care. Patients stay 90-180 days, sometimes longer, working to stabilize and develop coping skills to help them manage symptoms safely upon release. Studies have shown that patients experience better transitions to independent living when treated in a setting such as this.
The expansion project will create new jobs, further strengthening the local economy and offering employment opportunities to Toppenish and the surrounding communities. “We are sincerely grateful for all the support and attention that has been given to this project. Legislators and our community helped secure the future of Astria Toppenish Hospital,” said Cathy Bambrick, hospital Administrator.
A ground breaking ceremony will be held July 2, 2024 at 2pm at Astria Toppenish Hospital, 502 W. 4th Avenue. There will be a short presentation in the hospital conference room followed by a question-and-answer session. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served.
