Astria Health welcomes new Chief Nursing Officer for Astria Toppenish Hospital

Astria Health welcomes Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Toni Maxwell as the new Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for Astria Toppenish Hospital (ATH).

“I started working with Astria Health to provide COVID-19 relief,” said Ms. Maxwell. “I’ve grown to love this organization and the people we serve, and I’m thrilled to be joining as a permanent member of the team.”

Ms. Maxwell started working for a humanitarian emergency response company that built alternative COVID-19 facilities during the start of the pandemic. She joined ATH in November 2021 as a FEMA Emergency Department and Med Surg/ICU Director. Once she started at Toppenish, she immediately improved the quality of care and employee morale within nursing departments.

“Toni’s leadership style centers around collaboration and teamwork,” said Cathy Bambrick, ATH Administrator. “We wanted her for our team for several reasons, but what we like about Toni is her positive perspective, innovative spirit and relentless drive to improve patient care continuously.”

Earlier this year, Ms. Maxwell became ATH’s Interim CNO working alongside Ms. Bambrick and Astria Health leadership teams across the health system. She is also serving as the Interim CNO for Astria Sunnyside Hospital (ASH) and will retain that role until ASH fills that position.

Ms. Maxwell brings extensive experience in nursing care and leadership to Astria Health. As CNO, she’s been in charge of staffing, training, medical record management, collaborative efforts with partner agencies, management of day-to-day operations, compliance, data management and reporting. Her nursing experience spans all hospital areas including but not limited to intensive care, emergency services, oncology, medical/surgery services, surgery, telemetry, infusion, neurology and orthopaedics. Before becoming a registered nurse, she worked in hospitals as a phlebotomist, unit secretary, monitor tech and nurse tech. She received her Master of Science in Nursing degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 2016.

“Toni believes that no employee role is too big or too small to help improve quality of care and patient outcomes,” said Bambrick.

Astria Health, headquartered in the heart of the Yakima Valley, is the largest non-profit healthcare system based in Eastern Washington state. Astria Health is the parent organization of Astria Sunnyside Hospital and Astria Toppenish Hospital, along with 23 outpatient clinics offering primary care and specialty services, including but not limited to behavioral health, cardiology, home health and hospice, neurosurgery, oncology, podiatry, rehabilitation therapy and sleep medicine.
