Hematology

Hematology oncology combines two fields of medicine: hematology, which is the study of the blood, and oncology, the study and treatment of cancer. Hematologic oncologists are trained in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of blood cancers and blood-related disorders. These include blood and bone marrow cells.

Hematologists care for multiple blood disorders including, but not limited to:

  • anemia
  • bone marrow failure
  • enzyme deficiencies
  • hemophilia and coagulation disorders (excessive bleeding or trouble clotting)
  • iron metabolism disorders
  • myeloid disorders (white blood cell disorder)
  • thrombosis (including deep vein)
